In Season 3 Week 3 of the poker session, Dalten's in-person debut raised questions about his identity, but the standout performance was Denny Flynn's $392 profit, giving him the Season 3 lead. Forte's cautious play and Joyce's vulnerability to Phil's bluffs were also noted.
Season 3 Week 3 Write-Up
The hype for this week’s session had bubbles throughout the day, particularly after Dalten announcing his in-person debut. Over the last couple of months, Dalten dominated the online circuit, all the while maintaining his anonymity. This, of course, led to speculation that “Dalten” was just Phil using a burner phone.
Even as Dalten sat down, skepticism about his true identity persisted. This was in part the product of Phil’s rare absence. To everyone’s surprise, Phil would join the table roughly an hour into the session, sparked by a failure to effectively bag any snatch.
But the biggest story of the night has to be the superb play of Denny Flynn. Denny found himself routinely picking up big pots, and didn’t discriminate against his victims. In total, Denny would walk out with a monstrous $392 profit.
Denny’s biggest win came against Phil (UTG+2), however. Flynn would wake up to the rockets (Ac, As) in the LoJack. After calling down Denny preflop, Phil would check raise all-in on the turn. Despite a flush potentially being on the table, Denny puts in the call before revealing his set of Aces. To the shock of the table, Phil reveals that he’d been chasing a communal payout with a bluffed 7,2.
Y’know, it’s hard to not feel good for Denny this season. A brutal Season 2 performance (-$600) pushed Flynn deep into the red for his career. But after his performance this week, Denny has willed himself back into profit. Entering Week 4, Denny has a comfortable Season 3 lead, over $400 more than 2nd (Joyce).
Other Notes:
⁃ Forte’s 5% VPIP is the lowest at the table by a wide margin. It’ll be interesting to see if he adjusts his range entering week 4.
⁃ Dalten managed to hold his own, but didn’t exactly dominate in his debut. His $8 profit is a far cry from the $250 he averages online. Are there tells being exploited? Can Dalten maintain his composure despite the massive target on his back?
⁃ How many poker books does Joyce need to read before he stops getting bluffed off winning hands against Phil?
